10 Things to Pack If You’re Going Hiking in the Poconos
Posted on: June 15, 2020
A trip to the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania is an excellent opportunity to get in touch with nature. You can explore the Poconos on horseback, go fishing on Lake Harmony, or take an adrenaline-rushing whitewater adventure down the Lehigh River. The most popular way to enjoy the gorgeous views of the Poconos is simply by hiking on the many trails throughout the region.
Never underestimate the power of nature. It is important that you prepare for your trip by packing the ten essentials as outlined by the 8th edition of “Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills,” the go-to authority on hiking safely.
1. Navigation
It’s easy to get turned around on a hike. That’s why it’s important to bring some navigational tools out with you.
If you’re a traditionalist, you can pack a topographic map and magnetic compass, just make sure you know how to read both before you set out. If you’re more of a technophile, there are plenty of GPS devices on the market for hikers. You don’t want to rely on your cell phone; you likely won’t have service on the trails.
Always make sure to let someone know you’re heading out on a hike and the area you’ll be in, in case something does go wrong. If you do find yourself lost, stop immediately and stay where you are.
2. Sun Protection
Even though you’ll be among the trees, the sun’s powerful rays will find you. Thirty minutes before you go out on your hike, apply SPF50 or higher. Bring the bottle with you and reapply every two hours. You can still get burnt on a sunny day; so don’t let the clouds trick you into leaving the bottle behind.
You may want to consider packing a hat and sunglasses for additional protection.
3. Insulation
Always prepare for the coldest possible weather for the season you’re hiking in. If the temperature drops or you do get lost and have to spend the night, it is important that you stay warm.
This could mean packing a hat, gloves, and jacket, depending on the month you’re hiking.
4. Illumination
It is easy to loose track of time when you’re taking in the beauty of the Poconos. If you’re out later than you expected and get caught in the dark, a headlamp or flashlight can go a long way. Don’t forget to double check the batteries before you leave.
5. First-aid Supplies
Some basic first-aid supplies are great to have in the event of an emergency. Gauze, bandages, a needle and thread, and some aspirin can go a long way in aiding most minor injuries. You also don’t want to leave without a can of insect repellent with you.
6. Fire
If you do get lost, you will need to build a fire. Keep a butane lighter and some waterproof matches in your first-aid kit.
7. Repair Kit and Tools
You never know what challenges you might come across on your hike. A Swiss army knife or a multi-tool should cover you. Although you may also want to bring some duct tape and cable ties, depending on the length of your hike and the size of your pack.
8. Nutrition
If you’re going out for a day hike, pack a light snack to keep your energy up. There are many items on the market like Clif Bars and Naked Bars, but you can do just as well with a sandwich or some homemade granola.
For longer hikes, add one additional day of food for emergencies. Dry food will help save on space and weight.
9. Hydration
Even on a short hike, you should pack water. It is advised that you bring a minimum of 2 liters of water for every day you plan on hiking and 2 additional liters of water for one additional day, in the event of an emergency.
10. Emergency Shelter
Should you find yourself lost in the woods during your hike, you can easily build an emergency shelter if you’ve packed the right supplies. A small tent would be great but you can use a tarp or even trash bags if you had to. You may also want to consider packing an insulated sleeping pad and space blanket.
Hiking in the Poconos is a great way to spend your vacation. Do it safely by making sure these ten essentials are in your pack.
