The 2017 Victorian Ball in Jim Thorpe, PA
Posted on: September 12, 2017
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to attend a grand ball during the Victorian era, with the elaborate gowns, dapper tailcoats, and everyone dancing the waltz? If you’re in the Poconos on Saturday, November 11, you can live out this fantasy, when the Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center hosts their annual Victorian Ball fundraiser in Jim Thorpe, PA.
Taking place 30-minutes south of Split Rock Resort, this popular local event offers a unique experience you won’t soon forget. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Victorian garb. This entails anything from ball gowns and feathers, to tailcoats, top hats and canes.
While the Victoria era took place between, 1837 and 1901, historical accuracy is not important here. The idea is to have fun. Feel comfortable dressing in whatever vintage look you can find.
The Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center has put together a list of places online where you can purchase your outfit for the evening:
VICTORIAN CHOICE
HISTORICAL EMPORIUM
RECOLLECTIONS
Still, you’re perfectly welcome to wear modern evening attire; a long skirt, dress, or black tie will do.
The important thing is that you come ready to dance! There will be period dances set to Victorian-era music. The dances will be simple and easy to follow, lead by Master Dance Caller Sue Dupre, to help you get the hang of it. Towards the end of the evening, there will be a free dance period, with modern music.
You’re bound to work up an appetite doing all of that waltzing. There will be cold and hot hors d'ouevres during the cocktail hour. Stations with refreshments and finger foods will be open throughout the evening, including a dessert table to satisfy your sweet tooth.
There will be alcohol being served to anyone of age, including Victorian-styled cocktails and champagne.
A photographer will be on site to snap photos of you posing and dancing in your Victorian garments. There will also be a complimentary photo booth for attendees to use.
Tickets to the Victorian Ball cost $75.00 with all of the proceeds going directly to maintaining the Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center. To purchase yours, visit https://www.thevictorianball.com. May your dance card always be full.
